Der Thinktank Brookings Institution fragte bei einer Diskussion am 12. Februar nach. In den schriftlichen Eingangsstatements der Diskutanten gab es unterschiedliche Antworten auf die Frage „Is the US-China relationship the most consequential relationship for America in the world?“ Für Graham Allison (Harvard) ist die Antwort klar. Kurz und bündig schreibt er: „Yes. If not China, who?“ Josh M. Cartin (Georgetown University) sagt hingegen No. Auch Elizabeth Economy (Hoover) sieht China nicht als wichtigsten Beziehungspartner, sondern andere: „Far more consequential is the U. S. relationship with its network of allies and partners in Asia, Europe, and North America.” Differenziert äußert sich Susan A. Thornton (Yale Law School): “China may be the most consequential ´other country`.”
