Brian DeMare ist Geschichtsprofessor an der Tulane University in New Orleans. Dort unterrichtet er auch moderne chinesische Geschichte. „I always end my courses in modern China with two final messages for my students: go to China, and when you go, be sure to visit the countryside.” Diesen Rat verriet DeMare in dem Artikel “You Can´t Understand Modern China Without Looking at the History of Land Reform”, den das Magazin der amerikanischen Linken “Jacobin” soeben veröffentlichte. DeMare diskutiert darin die jahrhundertealte Frage: Wem gehört das Land? Bei der Beantwortung spannt DeMare den historischen Bogen von der Qin-Dynastie bis zur Landreform unter Mao Ende der 40er, Anfang der 50er Jahre, die viele Menschen das Leben gekostet hat. DeMare, der über Maos Landreform ein Buch geschrieben hat („Land Wars: The Story of China´s Agrarian Revolution“, Stanford University Press, 2019), bemängelt die fehlende Aufarbeitung dieser Zeit durch die KP: “For the moment, it seems the party is not ready to question its official account of land reform. Until that time comes, we can still visit the Chinese countryside, and wonder what secrets lie buried under decades of history.”
