Es wird kräftig spekuliert, wann sich die Präsidenten der beiden Supermächte China und USA treffen werden. Aktueller Favorit: Der G20-Gipfel im Rom. Dabei haben sich Joe Biden und Xi Jinping früher schon häufiger getroffen. Vor fast zehn Jahren, im August 2011, reiste der damalige US-Vizepräsident Joe Biden für fünf Tage nach China. Eingeladen hatte ihn Xi Jinping, damals ebenfalls Vizepräsident. Es war ein anderer Biden als der heutige. Er redete lobend über China, pries die Zusammenarbeit und die Bedeutung der Kooperation beider Staaten. Freundlich und jovial parlierte er vor Schulkindern, und an der Sichuan University in Chengdu hielt er eine Art Grundsatzrede. Hier ein paar Auszüge aus dieser Rede, die Biden heute natürlich so nicht mehr halten würde und die beweist, wie anpassungsfähig Politiker sein können:
– „…let me be clear, I believe in 1979 and said so and I believe now that a rising China is a positive development, not only for the people of China but for the United States and the world as a whole.”
– “A rising China will fuel economic growth and prosperity.”
– “Direct discussions between senior policymakers and the personal ties that result from such discussions …are the keys to building cooperation.”
– “The fact is China and the United States face many of the same threats and share many of the same objectives and responsibilities”.
– “A more prosperous China will mean more demand for American-made goods and services and more jobs back home in the United States of America.”
– “It is in our self-interest that China continues to prosper.”
