Am Silvesterabend hielt Xi Jinping bereits seine zehnte Neujahrsansprache an das chinesische Volk. Vor ihm auf seinem Schreibtisch drei Telefone, ein weißes und zwei rote (letztere nur für die Spitzenfunktionäre). Dahinter eine Bücherwand, drapiert mit vielen Fotos. Wer und was dort gezeigt wird weckt inzwischen fast mehr Aufmerksamkeit als die Rede selbst. Die Regierungszeitung „China Daily“ hat sehr genau über Xis Schulter geschaut und alle 27 Fotos im Regal ausgewertet und erklärt. Neu waren mehrere Xi-Fotos aus dem Jahr 2022: Xi vor dem 20. Parteitag, Xi auf dem G20-Gipfel, Xi besucht Hongkong, Xi verleiht Orden an Veteranen, und, und… Interessant, dass zwei Fotos auch den soeben verstorbenen Jiang Zemin zeigen, einmal mit Xis Vater Xi Zhongan und einmal mit Xi und Hu Jintao. Ach so, eine Rede hat Xi natürlich auch gehalten. Sinocism-Herausgeber Bill Bishop stellte dabei fest: „He sounded and looked tired and low energy.” Zu Covid sagte Xi: „We have now entered a new phase of Covid response where tough challenges remain.“ Aber er gibt sich optimistisch: “The light of hope is right in front of us.” Er betonte die Stärke der Einheit: “When the 1,4 billion Chinese work with one heart and one mind, and stand in unity with a strong will, no task will be impossible and no difficulty insurmountable.” Die Einheit bezog er auch auf die Taiwan-Frage: “The people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are members of one and the same family. I sincerely hope that our compatriots on both sides of the strait will work together with a unity of purpose to jointly foster lasting prosperity of the Chinese nation.” Taiwans Präsidentin Tsai Ing-wen antwortet einen Tag später bei ihrer Neujahrsansprache im Präsidentenpalast in Taipeh: „War is never an option for solving a problem. Only by boosting stable development in the region together, through dialogue and collaboration can we bringing security and happiness to more people.”
