Jedes Jahr muss das U. S. Department of Defense – besser bekannt unter dem Namen Pentagon – einen Bericht an den Congress abliefern, in dem er Chinas Militär analysiert. Vor kurzem war es wieder mal so weit. Das Pentagon präsentierte den 196-Seiten-Report „Military and Security Developments Involving the People´s Republic of China 2022“. Wie nicht anders zu erwarten war, wird hier China als der große, der einzige Rivale dargestellt: „…identifies the PRC as the only competitor with the intent and, increasingly, the capacity to reshape the international order”. Der Volksrepublik werden globale Ambitionen unterstellt, die die KP zusammen mit der PLA (People´s Liberation Army/Volksbefreiungsarmee) erreichen will: „The report illustrates how the CCP increasingly turns to the PLA in support of its global ambitions.“ Der Bericht enthält wie immer eine aktuelle Bestandsaufnahme der PLA. Die Armee (PLA Army/PLAA) verfügt danach über eine Mannstärke von 975 000. Die PLA Navy (PLAN) besitzt 340 Schiffe und U-Boote, die PLA Air Force (PLAAF) verfügt über 2800 Flugzeuge. Über Letzteres schreiben die Autoren: „The PLAAF is rapidly catching up to Western air forces”. Kritisiert wird ferner Chinas atomare Aufrüstung: “PRC has continued to accelerate the modernization, diversification, and expansion of its nuclear forces.”
